The strip operation - The steps

Step by step

You are seated in a comfortable chair. Your requirements are discussed at length and the design of the transplantation is planned in detail, by drawing and measuring. When we have agreed a concensus of how to use the resources, and You are satisfied, You sign the masterplan.

Step 2.Sedation and Anestethics
The head, or part of it, is shaved to minimise the risk of infection. If we have agreed not to shave, only the strip of skin at the back of Your head, where the actual surgery will be performed, is shaven. In the latter case, the hair above the donor-area will be parted and fixed, so it can cover the incision-line, when the operation is finished.

We insert a cannula into a superficial vessel on Your arm. We then administer the necessary medications intravenously as required. The effect is immediate. Thus when the local anestethics are administrated You will feel calm.

Step 3. Harvest
We are extracting a strip of skin from the back of Your head. You are drowsy, and do not feel any pain. The effect of this sedation gradually fades within an hour, and by that time, the surgeon has closed the wound in a most discrete way. The sutures can in most cases be removed after 7 days.

The meticulous job, to seperate the skin strip into numerous grafts, is now in full swing. But You will have a break and we will serve You some refreshments.

Step 4. Implanting
When You return to the room, You will rest in a reclined position. Sedation is given repeatedly, and You will sleep in periods for the rest of the procedure. The scalp has been anaesthetized and the grafts are planted. This work goes on for hours, and occoupies two-three people. In our larger operations, more than 2000 implants are performed, providing more than 5000 hair follicles.

Step 5. Cleaning and protection
All the implants are now complete, and the area is cleaned. A smooth, non-sticking and absorbing coverage is provided, held firmly in position by bandages. This will protect the scalp over the following night.
